Addiction TreatmentThere have been many approaches to addiction treatment over the past couple of hundred years. No approach to date has been more successful for addiction treatment than the 12 step recovery approach introduced by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935. Some of the early initiatives to provide addiction treatment met with initial success, but most of them faded away over the years due to conflicts of interest and/or lack of focus. Addiction treatment has come a long way since then. The Minnesota model was developed in the middle of the last century using a comprehensive approach toward addiction treatment. It has been found to be very successful in engaging individuals in early recovery to commit themselves to a life of recovery. This model for addiction treatment adopted and modified by the Betty Ford Center combined with a strong emphasis on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous has proven to be among the best possible models in use today. In the 19th century, there were many abstinence movements trying to deal with the diseases of alcoholism and other drug addiction. Abstinence only models never met with more than limited success in treating addicts. It was found that by simply taking the addictive substance away, the addict did not go through any significant personality and behavioral change which would assist them in remaining clean and sober.
